President’s Message – Looking Ahead with Rotary

My message this month is about looking ahead — both as an organisation and in our own personal approach to Rotary.

Rotary offers every individual an opportunity to make a difference. That can be at a local, metropolitan, state, national or even international level. Take your pick — or simply start locally, get involved and find your way towards a rewarding experience.

Our causes reach across all of these levels, but the principle behind Rotary remains very simple: good people doing good things.

There are many ways to contribute. You may have a particular skill or experience that can assist with the organisation and running of a club. You may simply want to lend a hand, participate in an event or help another member achieve something worthwhile.

Rotary also provides genuine opportunities to meet people and build relationships. You could call it networking, but without the BNI approach. The relationships develop naturally through working together for a common purpose.

A major part of what we do is raising funds and directing those funds to worthy charities and community causes. As a member, you may even have the opportunity to introduce a charity or cause that is particularly close to your heart.

And if you are a younger person looking to broaden your horizons, meet new people and become more involved in your community, Rotary is a great place to give it a go.

You never quite know where getting involved might lead.

You might even become Club President one day!

Education & Literacy

The Rotary theme for the month of September is Basic Education and Literacy, which usually brings to mind
ensuring that children have an education and learning skills that will support them in later life. Interestingly
there are several facts that may or may not surprise you. More than 776 million people over the age of 15 are
illiterate, that’s 17% of the world’s adult population. Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities
to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.
We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults. Rotary members worldwide fight
adult illiteracy by working with local advocates to offer community literacy programs.

Concord Golf Day

Following the outstanding success of our recent Christmas in July Trivia Night and Ferragosto Dinner, the Rotary Club of Five Dock is pleased to invite you to support our next major fundraising event.

Our recent events achieved fantastic results, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) selling out its merchandise and our Trivia Night generating almost $15,000 in gross proceeds. Lucas Gardens School also benefited greatly from the success of our Ferragosto Dinner.

We now turn our attention to our Annual Concord Golf Day, to be held on Thursday, 8 October 2026.

We are seeking businesses and individuals who would like to support the day through sponsorship, participation, prize donations or attendance.

This year, our major charity beneficiaries will be Stewart House and ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children).

Your support will assist Rotary in continuing to fund important local and international community projects, while also providing valuable exposure and recognition for your business.

Whether you would like to become an event sponsor, enter a golf team, attend the dinner or discuss other ways you can support the day, I would be delighted to hear from you.
