More than hundred and fifty Rotarians, family members, friends and local business representatives attended the event held at Aqua Luna Waterfront dining, in Drummoyne. 

Ms Sally Sitou, Federal Member for Reid addressed the gathering congratulating the Club on its efforts in supporting children everywhere saying it 'demonstrated the generosity of the Australian communities more broadly in welcoming and building the lives we want, and our responsibilities to those around us, so that we may all prosper together'.

Thank you to our sponsors - Canada Bay Council, Club Five Dock, Fundo, AKA Brand Design and Trevor Lee and Son.  Together we raised approximately twenty-five thousand dollars.

With our charities needing us more than ever and normal fundraising not possible during much of 2021/2022 we decided to run a fortnightly 'Hundred’s Club' as an online fundraiser. Dollars raised were donated to Shelterbox.

The 'Hundred’s Club' let our business associates, families and friends get involved in an online initiative in an entertaining and rewarding way. The winning numbers were drawn randomly at our regular Zoom meetings.

In October we raised $2,000 for the international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and other aid items to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.

Shelterboxes are currently being sent to Haiti, following their disastrous earthquake, and to refugees fleeing Afghanistan.

Shelterbox history

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity established in 2000 in Helston,  Cornwall, UK, that provides emergency shelter and other aid items to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.

Rotarians and Rotary groups across the world support ShelterBox in a variety of ways,  from raising funds and awareness to providing support on the ground during its   response to a disaster.

Ending Polio

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding  the world of this disease is closer than ever.

We have supported the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since its first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in   1979.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease.   You can find out more here 

Our history

The Rotary Club of Five Dock has been working in the community for almost 50 years

Our first club meeting was held on 16th April 1973. The Club's charter night was then held on the 21st July 1973.

The Charter was presented by the then District Governor, Bob Johnson and Past District Governor, Steve Turtle. At the time the club had 24 charter members.

Since then the  Club has developed a rich tradition of involvement in the local community, from its award winning restoration of Rodd Point and the Cross and Tomb, to participation in many local projects and events.

More than half a million dollars has been raised and distributed to organisations and charities supported by the Club such as:

• Children's Hospital at Westmead 
• The Lucas Gardens School (Five Dock) 
• Concord Hospital
• Balmain Hospital 
• the Red Shield Appeal and
• the Australian Rotary Health and Research Foundation
• Rivendell Youth Mental Health
• Abbotsford Sea Scouts
• Sailability
• Handital

Rotary Youth Programs

The Club supports all the Rotary Youth programs developing strong ties with the local Schools. It has hosted many inbound and outbound exchange students. It has been involved in local school fetes, the local scouts groups, the Blaxland Ridge Rural Fire Brigade, Walk Against Drugs, The Olympic Torch Relay, the Paralympic movement, two Tunnel walks and the Airport Link.

Many members have served on District Committees and others have served on offshore working teams. The club helped send two containers of goods to a mental hospital in Fiji and is currently involved in another humanitarian project in Fiji. In the area of Vocational Service the club has hosted annual Pride of Workmanship Award nights enabling local businesses to give special recognition to employees.

Recognition

The Paul Harris Fellowship is Rotary’s highest award. Twenty-one have been awarded by the Club, 4 to non Rotarians, providing US$21,000 to the Rotary Foundation for its humanitarian work, Ambassadorial Scholarships and Group Study Exchanges.
 
In addition, 7 members hold Sapphire Paul Harris Pins. These include current members Jim Simpson and Tony Lo Surdo.  

Past Presidents Russell Marsh and Claude Bennie were nominated by the Club and received Commonwealth Recognition Awards for Senior Australians in 2000.  They were also awarded Commonwealth Centenary Medals.  Tremendous achievement by both of them.

In the Rotary Year, 2000-2001 the Club was awarded the prestigious District 9750, Athol Johnson Trophy for the best achievement over the Four Avenues of Rotary Service. It also became a sister club to the Rotary Clubs of Messina, Italy and USJ, Malaysia in this year.

The Rotary Club of Five Dock enjoys a reputation as a vital and friendly club – may it long continue in this spirit and in its efforts to place "Service Above Self".

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.

During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter. 

Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”
